Incidents Around Nuclear and Military Sites
The record clusters where the sensors already are.
Why Sensitive Facilities Generate Records
Military bases and nuclear-weapons sites do not attract anomalies. They attract instruments.
A Minuteman missile field is wired with security sensors and patrolled by armed response teams who log any anomaly in a duty book a supervisor signs. A naval destroyer's watch stands through the night with night-vision optics, air-search radar, and a combat information center trained to write down anything unexplained. An air base sits inside controlled airspace, so an unauthorized track can trigger an intercept, a radio transcript, and eventually a case file.
None of that is true of the empty highway, the back porch, or the fishing boat where most reported sightings actually happen. There, a strange light in the sky produces, at most, a phone call and a memory — and neither reliably survives to become a document.
So when an archive built from declassified and FOIA-released material — this one included — shows documented incidents clustering near missile fields, air bases, and naval task groups, that cluster is doing double duty. It reflects real reported events. It also reflects where the paperwork already existed to be written, classified, and eventually released.
The chapters that follow look at specific cases at sensitive sites, and at what their own official records do, and do not, establish.
Cold War Records
On the morning of 16 March 1967, all ten Minuteman missiles of Echo Flight at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana, lost strategic alert within roughly ten to forty seconds of one another. A declassified 341st Strategic Missile Wing unit history documents an inconclusive engineering investigation, and separately states that contemporaneous rumors of UFO activity around the flight were investigated and disproven at the time. Decades later, a retired launch officer began publicly describing a reported sighting coincident with a missile shutdown; his own account has since named a different launch facility than Echo Flight, and no 1967 document ties his story to the Echo Flight fault specifically. Anomaly Index classifies the case as unresolved: insufficient data.
The same decade produced other site-linked cases. In July 1952, controllers at Washington National Airport and radar operators at Andrews Air Force Base tracked unidentified targets over two consecutive weekends above the nation's capital; a Civil Aeronautics Administration study later tied a documented temperature inversion to nearly every report. In December 1980, U.S. Air Force security police at RAF Woodbridge, England, reported lights in the adjacent forest; a nearby lighthouse and an independently recorded meteor account for much, though not all, of what witnesses described.
Unresolved means the available evidence does not support a reliable identification. It does not imply extraterrestrial or nonhuman origin. In each case above, it is the site's own security and duty logs that explain why a record survives at all.
Modern Reporting
Over several nights in July 2019, U.S. Navy destroyers training off California's Channel Islands — including USS Kidd and USS Russell — reported small unmanned aircraft flying near the ships after dark, in one case matching a destroyer's speed and holding position over its flight deck. Deck logs, radar tracks, and a night-vision recording later shown to Congress all survive because a warship's watch is required to document exactly this kind of encounter in real time. Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray later testified the Navy was "reasonably confident" the best-documented footage correlated with conventional drones, and FOIA-released briefing material separately named a specific merchant vessel as a likely surveillance platform for two of the nights. Anomaly Index classifies the case as likely identified.
Seven months earlier, a Chinese government high-altitude balloon had crossed the continental United States over more than a week, tracked continuously by NORAD. A senior defense official stated on the record that its path carried it over sensitive sites, including Montana's Minuteman III missile field, before an F-22 brought it down off South Carolina. Recovered debris and sworn congressional testimony left little ambiguity about its nature.
That clarity came from a redundant, modern sensor and tracking network — the same kind of standing infrastructure that, decades earlier, left the Echo Flight shutdown only partly explained.
Documentation and Selection Bias
The same conditions that make sensitive sites well documented also make them a biased sample. A security policeman's statement, entered in a log the same night, carries institutional weight that an unprompted civilian recollection does not. A duty log has a timestamp; a memory recalled years afterward does not. A Freedom of Information Act request can compel a defense agency to search its files; there is no equivalent process for a family's photo album or a fishing boat's logbook.
That asymmetry shapes what ends up in an archive like this one. A sighting near a missile field, an air base, or a naval task group is comparatively likely to generate a radar track, a same-night witness statement, and eventually a released file decades on. A sighting over open farmland or open ocean, involving no trained observer and no institutional sensor, is comparatively likely to generate nothing durable at all — whatever actually happened.
The visible clustering of documented cases around military and nuclear installations is, in real part, an artifact of who was equipped and obligated to write things down — not proof that the sites themselves draw unusual activity. Several of the resulting cases remain unresolved not because the setting was extraordinary, but because even institutional records — arriving late, filtered through memory, or missing key instrumentation — can still fall short of what a reliable identification requires. Unresolved means the evidence does not support one; it does not imply extraterrestrial or nonhuman origin.
What Proximity Does and Does Not Establish
Anomaly Index applies one rule consistently: an incident is tagged to a nuclear or military facility only when an official source explicitly identifies that facility or operational context. Geographic closeness alone is never sufficient — a case is not linked to a missile field, an air base, or a naval task group just because it happened to occur nearby.
That distinction matters because proximity and causation are easy to blur. The 2023 balloon shootdown is a clean illustration: U.S. officials stated on the record that the balloon's flight path crossed Montana's Minuteman III missile field, and this index reports that fact because it is officially documented. But the balloon's presence over a missile field does not explain what it was, and did not need to — continuous NORAD tracking and recovered physical debris identified it independently as a conventional surveillance platform. The site association and the identification rest on separate evidence, arrived at separately.
Elsewhere in this story, proximity to a sensitive site coincides with cases that remain unresolved. That coincidence does not establish that the facility caused, attracted, or was involved in whatever was reported. Unresolved means that the available evidence does not support a reliable identification. It does not imply extraterrestrial or nonhuman origin — and it does not, by itself, implicate the facility nearby.
